Admiral Daniel V. Gallery boarded and captured a German U-Boat at sea in June, 1944—the first American officer to so capture an enemy warship since 1815!

U-505 is Admiral Gallery’s own story of his extraordinary feat—and also a gripping narrative of the fierce Allied war against the German U-Boat fleet.

“EXCELLENT.”—Chicago Tribune

“Terrific…the first-hand story of Uncle Sam’s U-Boat killers.”—Chicago Daily News

“Brimming with thrills.”—Philadelphia News

“An engrossing tale…Pungent, entertaining, informative.”—Navy Times

“A humdinger of a sea story…a highly readable book, trimmed from stem to stern with the writer’s irrepressible sense of humor.”—Chicago Sunday Times

“Excellent in several ways it provides a fine quick survey of the whole Atlantic war, it describes the operation of the German U-boat service, and, most dramatically, it tells how an American task force under Admiral Gallery achieved the unique feat of capturing a German submarine.”—Publishers’ Weekly

“U-505 IS ONE OF THE WAR’S MOST EXCITING MEMOIRS.”—Chicago News

“One of the best non-fiction books about World War II.”—Raleigh News & Observer

“A masterful job that merits the attention of every lover of sea stories.”—Pittsburgh Press

U505 eBook RearAdmiral Daniel Vincent Gallery

I've always been fascinated by submarines, so I've read a lot about them. U-boats are my fave, especially the story of the U-505. I was therefore anxious to read this book, and wow, I sure haven't been disappointed! Just when you think you just read the best part, BAM! something else exciting happens. I was reading this book aloud to hubby, and, at one point, I stopped, we looked at each other in shock, then read on. Can't put it down! And then -- after that -- OMG! Even MORE! I had to stop reading and take a break. Whew.

A very nice feature is the humor that Gallery sometimes throws at you, unexpectedly. He has an awesome funny bone -- so of course I had to order a few of the other books he's written. I recommended this book to my friends and family, all of whom know of my fascination with U-boats. I'm sure at least my brother will be buying it, and I guarantee he'll love it. You would too! GREAT book, AWESOME story, very well told!

U505 eBook RearAdmiral Daniel Vincent Gallery Reviews

I love the story but hate that I bought this book. The same story is told by the copyrighted book "Twenty Million Tons Under the Sea The Daring Capture of the U-505." ( 99 cents) This publisher went around the copyright laws to publish this story.
Very good book about the US Navy capture of the German U-Boat U-505, the first time the US Navy had captured an enemy warship on the high seas since 1812! I find all of Dan V Gallery's books to be a great read, would love to see them back in print!
A fantastic bit of WW II history written by the commander on the scene. An enlightening book complete with the problems, both legal and logistical, of moving a WW II German submarine for the Atlantic Coast to the lawn of the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago. I've seen it there and it is awesome!
My Great Uncle was then Commander Dan Gallery, who lead the team that captured the U-505. I have, in younger years, traveled through the U-505 with him when he would visit us in Chicago and have many fond memories of him and the U-505 which he was very proud of. I read all his books when I was much younger and they were still in publication. I now want to relive some of thoes times through these books. Thanks for selling it to me.
A VERY GOOD BOOK ABOUT ONE GERMAN SUB. WELL WRITTEN AND, ALTHOUGH THE AUTHOR INSERTS HIS OWN OPINION OFTEN, IT IS DONE TASTEFULLY. FROM READING HIS ACCOUNT OF THE 505 ONE CAN SEE HE WAS A FINE LINE OFFICER AND WAS MINDFUL OF THE NEEDS OF HIS TROOPS.
This book is made up of a series of exciting sea stories told by those who participated in them. The action is authentic and well portrayed, and puts the reader in the middle of the fight. However, there are two major drawbacks to making this a really enjoyable read. The entire story is laden with cliches, and the typos abound throughout. A one time read by the editor could have eliminated this fault, or explained in the case of quoted reports.
Gallery does a great job telling the Battle of the Atlantic from start to finish, while weaving in the story of the U-505 and it's capture by the Hunter Killer group led by the carrier Guadalcanal. Very detailed reporting by the man who devised the plot to capture a U-boat and carried it out . A recommended book. Story continues through the journey to Chicago and it's final resting place at the Museum of Science and Industry. A must see if in Chicago.
